Here's some DIY fashion inspiration in case you still need a costume for tomorrow:
I SPY: STYLISH ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK - WEEK TEN- DOMINIC HOWARD (MUSE) BRITISH FASHION INVASION TWO WEEKS IN A ROW!!!!!!!!!!!!
What can I say? Anyone who customizes their own jeans in a tiny public restroom while on tour in Europe, (even though they could easily pay someone ELSE to do it), deserves this recognition.
posted on TwitPic on October 28, 2009:
I feel like a proud mom.
These guys are quickly becoming my favourite band to follow on Twitter. They post the BEST pictures.
I highly recommend them to anyone on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/muse
In other news,
HALLOWEEN IS TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I SPY: STYLISH ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK - WEEK NINE - LILY ALLEN
Ok, so she's not really a "ROCKSTAR", (yeah one of my pet peeves is actually when pop stars get called "rock stars" so yeahhhh) but I wasn't able to find a true rocker that caught my attention this week, (yet again!). And besides, it's about time I mention a chick on this feature, eh??
I've always admired Miss Allen's quirky British style. I spied her at the newsstand today on the cover of the UK version of Elle magazine. I didn't feel like paying $10 for the thing, so here's the pics I found online:
Wigs rule.
I've always secretly wondered what it would be like being a platinum blonde. (Ew did I really just admit that?)
According to elleuk.com, some of the clothes featured in this shoot were from Luella, Richard Nicoll and Christopher Bailey (for Burberry), amongst others.
Viva British Fashion!!!!!!!
I browsed around for some similar key items for emulating the feel of this pictorial:
Lace tights: Hottopic.com - $8
Sheer dress: urbanoutfitters.com - $48
metallic dress: forever21.com - $25
Now all we need is a blonde wig and we're set!!!!!
When every day, you get up just a little bit later than the day before. When every evening, you start to procrastinate and forget about your assignments just a little more than the evening before. When things that are supposed to be sticking in your brain fly straight through one ear and out of the other. When you start off by skipping one class, and then you want to skip another, again, and again, and again.
Not that I need any more excuses as to why Mat Devine of Kill Hannah was my "Stylish Rockstar of the Week" last week, but this Monday he gave some fashion advice to a young male fan on his "Ask Mat" advice column/blog that I felt couldn't be ignored:
"Make sure you have great shoes, maybe a tiny hint of good cologne, one simple silver ring and maybe try layering the hoody underneath with a thermal longsleeve or one of American Apparel’s thin v-necks. Don’t shave for 2 weeks. Stick with earth tones and grays. Buy classic RayBans."
Do we speak the same fashion language or what??
Check out what he suggested to a young female fan when asked about the prom:
"Be original… buy vintage… opt for stargazer lilies over corsages. Raid your senile great aunt’s costume jewelry. Wear fingerless silk gloves and a ceremonial saber on your belt. if you can afford it, bring a live falcon."
What can I say? The man is a genius and I knew I declared him my hero (long ago) for a reason.
BUT... it has been a week, and that means it's time for a new winner.
I thought I wouldn't be able to find one this week, but I did. I should have posted this earlier but I've been kept busy with tons of homework and projects being due, and some kind of respiratory allergies that I never used to have suddenly decided to show up on Tuesday and I've been feeling blahhhh all week.
But those aren't excuses.
Get ready for an "I SPY" first, my darlings: A VERY SPECIAL EDITION.
I SPY: STYLISH ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK - WEEK EIGHT - CHRIS CORNER (IAMX)
Yet again, someone who shouldn't need much of an introduction. If you're an avid reader of this blog (which I'm sure most of you AREN'T), but if you ARE, then you should already know that - if my life absolutely depended on choosing just ONE fashion muse/icon/inspiration to last me forever - it would be this guy. I've talked about his outfit choices before... (do a search through my past posts). He never ceases to outdo himself. Every. Single. Time. Seriously.
I'm not kidding.
I've seen him in just about everything from a torn and reconstructed traditional Chinese style dress and top hat:
To everything in between, including but certainly NOT limited to: a gilded, gold one shoulder/one sleeved top, ruffled Elizabethan collars, and even a lacy black bra layered over a leopard print top, (the former of which belonged to a female fan who threw it onstage at him during a performance).
But I never... EVER... in a million years... expected to see Christopher Corner in FULL ON DRAG.
Yes, DRAG.
The brand new video for my favourite song "My Secret Friend" off of his latest album, "Kingdom of Welcome Addiction" was premiered this Wednesday on shockhound.com, due to massive email requests from fans. (IAMX's music videos are always darkly glamorous and artistic... this one was obviously no different).
As you can see, he looks like a gorgeous and glamourous Lolita inspired princess.
And since this song is a duet between him and Imogen Heap, it was only natural that she appear in this video in an equal 'role reversal' as the male:
Props go to her, as well. I think we should refer to her as an Honorary Stylish Rockstar of the Week for this post.
If you listen to the song's lyrics, you'd realize that this video was a genius visual interpretation. I'm not sure who directed this. But if they don't receive lots of acclaim for this, there's something wrong in the world.
Not that there already isn't, but that's a different story for a different time.
It doesn't matter whether you're a Chris Corner/IAMX fan or not. Nobody on this planet can ignore the fact that he is an ARTIST in the truest sense of the word.
I've been gleaning tons of inspiration in my fashion and photography classes this semester about how important it is to always be true to yourself, and to NEVER allow yourself to be affected by what anybody else will think about your creations.
I did a presentation on an amazing photographer, (and one of my faves), named Bruce Weber. I was inspired by this anecdote he gave in an interview:
"You've always got to be unafraid about having a fantasy life. and be unafraid that people will be judgemental. They are going to be judgemental anyway."
And just yesterday, a classmate shared a quote from the incredible graphic artist Stefan Sagmeister: "Trying to look good limits my life".
As you can see, Chris Corner is clearly not worried about what the a-holes of the world have to say. He has the guts to do something like dress in drag to prove a point and add meaning to his music.
To put it simply, the man is FEARLESS. Period.
And *that* is why he is this week's Stylish Rockstar.
Furthermore: I found a cool site that sells neat fascinators a la Chris in this video: fascinators.net
But I think I wanna try making one of my own... I already have a pretty cool netted headband from Ulta that I haven't worn in a while.
watch the IAMX video and tell me whether you are inspired in any way:
"I SPY": STYLISH ROCKSTAR OF THE WEEK - WEEK SEVEN - MAT DEVINE (KILL HANNAH)
(oh no, not this guy again...) ;)
Hmm... starting to have repeats on my "I Spy" posts! I kinda knew this would eventually happen, but oh well. They're repeats for a reason. These guys are so damn stylish it hurts.
I spied my old favourite from Week Four. He needs no special introduction from me... you should all know who he is by now, seeing as how I never shut up about his band, Kill Hannah. They had a new album released this Tuesday and Fuse.tv posted this mini interview video and photos with him this week.
But ANYWAYS. I didn't spy him wearing Anarchic Designs this time, unfortunately, but that's okay. This is his 'off day' kind of look and it's still just as attention-grabbing: effortless, casual, cool, and with his own signature kind of style.
If any aspiring lead singers feel like emulating this look for a day off doing interviews, I found some cool similar items to try:
Faux leather jacket from Urban Outfitters: $98
I didn't find a Smiths tshirt, but they did have this cool Morrissey one at Hot Topic: $20. (But of course, the one Mr. Devine has on is pure vintage and I'm sure he's had it for a while. It's the same one he wore when I saw KH last month. I think he's worn it every day on this tour, hahaha.)
These are his DocMartens - style no. 1914: $125... stuff your favourite skinny jeans into them and instantly become the coolest guy around. (Or coolest girl!.. I happen to love my Docs, man).
And you can never go wrong with black... how about trying them in shiny PVC??? Ooooooh.
He appears to be rocking some classic Ray Ban Wayfarers: (one can NEVER go wrong with this style... I love them).
But the RayBan website is kind of annoying and the glasses themselves are a bit pricey, so unless you have the money to spend, I'd suggest looking for a less expensive identical knockoff at the mall somewhere. But they might break easier. Blah.
Add your favourite jewelry and you're all set to give the Devine a run for his "Stylish Rockstar of the Week" titles.

I'm the fashion designer behind AnarchicDesigns.com who has a crush on a dead guy (Sid Vicious). I'm only happy when I SEW. I still play with dolls. I love to dance (especially in the dark). I live inside my head. I'm annoyed by happy people. Alice Cooper contributed to who I am today in a very humorous way. I love drawing. I love dressing up. I love cats. I love Japanese culture and music and fashion and food... (in other words, I just love Japan). I love pretty shoes. I'm completely obsessed with Hello Kitty and My Little Pony. Same goes for good music and CLOTHES. Lastly, in the words of Kit Pistol: "Life is too short to have on a bad outfit". Amen.
